Today, more than 8 million Americans are affected by renal-related diseases. This fact suggests that you will probably deal with renal patients often. Add to this the complex human reproductive system by which a single cell duplicates its genetic material, allowing an organism to grow and repair itself. To give patients with problems in either or both systems the best possible care, you need to know normal anatomy and physiology of the systems, specific disorders in each system, assessment methods, and treatments. This century has seen great changes in sexual feelings, attitudes, and beliefs in American society resulting in greatly changed sexual activities and habits of Americans. By the late 1970s and the 1980s, the growing number of individuals with several sexual partners made a change in the number of cases of sexually transmitted diseases. The number of cases of these diseases increased dramatically, some disease reaching epidemic proportions. Some of these diseases are dealt with in this course. It is important for you as a medical specialist to be informed about sexually transmitted diseases as well as other diseases and disorders of the genitalia. In many of these diseases/disorders, early diagnosis and treatment are essential to the return to complete health of the individual. In sexually transmitted diseases the first step to disease control and eventual eradication is to educate the public in prevention of these disease. Occasional references to military terminology or combat situations do not detract from the lesson's relevance for civilian medicine and health care. |
