angles) was one of many sub-topics in
Euclidian-style synthetic geometry.
Developments in science and technology--notably
astronomy, navigation, and surveying -- raised the
study of triangles into a realm of its won where it
could be studied and applied with the powerful
analytical tools of algebra.
