Studies
in English grammar and mechanics deal with the
English language in terms of word choice, spelling,
grammar and, to some extent, composition.
Contemporary
English grammar should set the standards for written
and verbal communication; but given the fluid nature
of the academic and social climates of the early
21st century, the "rules" of English grammar and
composition should be viewed as recommendations,
rather than rigid rules. Topics in English Grammar &
Mechanics courses should be offered in such a way
that the learner is able to apply or rework the
rules with in the context they are being applied.
