Art history has historically been
understood as the academic study of objects of art
in their historical development and stylistic
contexts, i.e. genre, design, format, and style.
This includes the "major" arts of painting,
sculpture, and architecture as well as the "minor"
arts of ceramics, furniture, and other decorative
objects.

Few people
pursue successful careers in Art History, as such. However, the subject can become
a valuable career asset in two ways. First, it can
serve as a
learning wrapper for the organizational and
analytical skills required for a diverse collection
of careers--criminal justice, business administration,
sales and marketing, to name just a few. Second Art
History can be bundled with Art Appreciation,
Journalism, and Media Studies to structure a career
as a journalist, author, columnist, or
knowledge aggregator for the visual arts.
