Applied mathematics can uncover patterns and point to realities that are not intuitively obvious. Ignore mathematics--particularly applied mathematics--and you destined to muddle about in the ordinary. --DH

In the academic sense, applied mathematics is not the collection of equations and mathematical methods that refer to particular areas of technology, science, or business. Rather, applied mathematics is the discipline responsible for creating the equations that find their way into the other disciplines that might benefit from them.

Applied mathematics is a discipline that stands between pure mathematics and practical mathematics. It is not, as many assume, a collection of math courses that is organized by discipline (such as biology, business, engineering, and so on). Practical math courses can be found in their respective schools and departments, usually under the heading of Core Resources or General Resources.
